2024 Grant Recipient - Granny
Granny’s Birth Initiative
AWARD: $100,000
FOCUS AREA: FAMILY
PROJECT: Granny's Hub
PROJECT IMPACT: Granny’s Hub, an initiative combining new and existing programs for new mothers and their infants, will help family members work together as a team at home.
Organization Statement: Granny’s Birth Initiative’s mission is to provide support for disenfranchised birthing families who are often overlooked, including those who are incarcerated, homeless, in foster care or are transitioning out of these systems.
Major Recent Successes:
- Maintaining a Maternity Pantry which provides prenatal, postpartum and infant care items to all families in need.
- Providing round trip transportation for families to go to appointments related to maternal or infant care.
How this funding will impact this organization:
Granny’s Birth Initiative was founded in 2019 by doula Alexa Hughes who realized that some of her clients had excess baby items while others had very few. So she established the Maternity Pantry to provide prenatal, postpartum and infant care items to all families in need. Other needs were also met: Doula Dash provides transportation to maternal or infant care appointments. The doulas can attend appointments with the mother, making sure she is understood and helping with follow up. Next Mommy Meals, a maternal nutrition service addressing food insecurities, was set up to provide meals when operating funds allow. The newest program, Doula Tech, provides specially trained doulas who can help infants and mothers, focusing particularly on pre-eclampsia, gestational diabetes and low baby weight.
An Impact100 grant allows Granny’s Hub to fund more Doula Techs, along with their higher malpractice costs, and increase funding for the other programs. In addition, the grant would help fund two new programs for low income families: the early childhood education initiative and the maternal mental health program.
Granny’s Hub will directly combat the Black maternal health crisis in Kentucky and support families by informing them of the local resources. Strengthening the nuclear family will strengthen the community.
